Early Warning System for Runaway Reactions
Based on our experience with calorimetry and thermal safety analysis, we now present the OLIWA (On LIne WArning System) which offers the chemist running
exothermic reactions a useful safety net. Temperature measurements are made continually throughout the reaction and constantly analysed. Alarm levels can be set so that a runaway reaction can
be detected and the appropriate steps taken. Either crash cooling, quenching or simply an alarm.
This is not a substitute for conducting thermodynamic evaluation of potentially exothermic
reactions before scaling up but to be used in addition. Many things can effect a reaction and not all are controllable all of the time. With this system at least an early warning is given so
that remedial action can be taken.
